Well, I didn't get the go-ahead to fish on the weekend, so its wednesday. Weather isn't great. That is to say, there is chance of rain, and biggish surf. Despite that, Dave T. is game to come along, so I bring the spinrod too.
Lousy night's sleep. I wake up again a half hour after the alarm, with a wierd stomach cramp. Drive down and get there 15 min. late, but DT was late too, so no worries. At least I didn't forget anything.
We rig up. Dave with the carolina rig + surf miki, me with the TCR #6 and the type 8 outbound. At least at first.
Manresa turns out to be unfishable, due to high and strong surf, so we drive up to Rio del Mar, where we find gentler conditions. Dave gets a lot of kelp, but has fun with it anyway. Then he gets a fish, which turns out to be the only one that day. Later I end up switching to the shooting head setup, with the intermediate line (300gr), and throw on a deceiver too, for good measure. The rod handles that fine, though at a slightly slower action. Still no fish, and Dave has to go, so I follow him back to the lot.
Fishing with Dave is great; he is really appreciative of the 'just getting out factor' and anything else is a bonus. Even catching kelp is fun for him. We saw dolphins tail slapping at Rio del Mar. Some magnificent pelicans flying low.
One the way home, I stop to check out Newbrighton, where I end up fishing some. Real calm there, and no kelp salad. Nice. A kid is also fishing, but hasn't gotten any. After passing him, some fish jumps right in front of me (jack smelt, or baby striper, or maybe a mackerel?). I get excited, but no takes. On the way back, the kid says he caught a mackerel.
High tide around 8am. I bag it around 11:15 and head back home.
