Pond outing with the lads.

The boys have tied up a bunch of flies since the trip to SJ flyshop where they met the Warpathflys guy Brent Dawson, and got a flytying lesson from him.

So we went up to Westlake this evening. Dominic tried his Blanton Bunny fly on the spinrod, and we rigged up a linus-popper on the short flyrod. It looked pretty dead up there, but one kid was already there, and other fisherfolk showed up soon. The bunny fly has great action, but no hits on it. I thought we wouldn't get any, but then Linus had a take on the popper, over by the tulies. He missed it, and the next one too, then went off to play.

I kept fishing.

Some more folks were showing up and one guy asked about the flyrod (an old Fenwick?) so I was showing it to him and when I looked back at the fly there was a fish taking it, or had just taken it and spat it back out. I tried again, and got a small bass, finally. Cool. Too bad the pictures came out all fuzzy..

Linus really had a good go at the flycasting, and Dominic is doing well with the spinrod. After the instruction to wait on the backcast, Linus laid out a real nice one, and earned a bunch of praise for it. Definitely a promising student.

Boys are really excited about tying flies now. Its fun.

Water was still pretty murky, and no real sign of bluegill. I thought maybe one of the takes on the popper may have been a bluegill, but it could have been the bass.
