Deva's last day of fishing for a while.. kid on the way. We made a date to go fish together at pinto lake. Weather has been variable, with a couple of cold fronts, so I figured the bass would be sulky.
Aanyway, its a clandestine trip. I prepare the gear the night before, and throw the float tube in the car as soon as kids and wife are out the door. Skip shower.
Deva is already there in his orange kayak. Comes in to say hi and get something from the car while I'm rigging up. This is my 2nd float tube outing. Water is, well.. not exactly clear, but not as bad as it will be later in summer, either. A number of other folks are there fishing. Some shore based, some in boaats.
I rig up the blue spincast setup for worms (Deva's plastics), and the TCR 6wt with a few options for flylines to try out.
Tubing is cool.. I can rig while I fin myself out to the edges where the trees and tulies are.
I try with the flyrod; first the mark-fly on the floater line, then switch to a popper (no sign of fish), then try one of Deva's senkos with the spincast setup. A few casts later, as I start the retrieve the line goes heavy and starts to throb. I have time to shout "hey Dood" in Deva's direction, and then the fish gets off.
After a while I get tired of throwing the worm and go back to flycasting. I switched line to the 8wt sinking outbound, which works just fine. I try with a weedless brown/sparkly wooly bugger, but no takes. Do a little dragging it along the tulie bank, kindof like trolling.. no takes. Later I switch back to the markfly, but no takes there either. I got all the way to the first 'point' on the right side of the lake, and fished the same area going back. Took some photos with the tele-lens on the way back too.
Turkey sandwich I made tasted good. Very relaxing, bopping around in the float tube.
I just make it home in time to throw the stuff in my office, and get myself downtown for Devlin's flute lesson.
A good outing, but I wish I had landed that fish. I want to tie up some brown bunny flies, with a little yeallow somewhere too. Weighted and weedless.
