More little fishies.

Driving down to the beach this morning (9:00) the question is: Manresa or Sunset? I stop in at manresa, but find the place lousy with surfers, so I get back in the car and head down to Sunset.

So far I have not had good luck with sunset state beach.

Today didn't seem like it would be an exception. The first thing that happens upon arrival is that I talk to one of the bait guys coming up, who says there is no bite. "Was great all last week". Figures. I decide to try it anyway, as the bite could change. I rig up, with a brand new leader and brand new flies; a surfmiki and a smallish conehead wormy-type fly of peacock herl body and brown marabou tail. I get down there and.. sure is pretty out. Sunny and there is a bunch of dolphins or porpoises close in just beyond the breakers, and also a lot of black diving ducks, with the white on their heads. Maybe they've eaten and scared away all the fish. I started casting but no hits, so I work my way south to where a few other fishing guys are standing. Still no hits, and after passing the fishing guys, I realize that I left my fishing licence up in the car. Crikey! Well, figuring it is a sign that I should go up there and go elsewhere, I head up to the car where I meet another bait guy who says I should go back down and fish just past where I was. He shows me his limit of fine perch he is taking home. Guess it wasn't slow for everyone.

So.. back down again, and to the south just before where the dead tree is there is a pretty interesting spot; one might call it a hole, and a bit of a trough. I went back down and worked the spot, and after a while I came into a school of dinks. Well, its better than being skunked. I caught 4; they all took the small wormy-fly. After a while of that, the wind started to come up pretty good, and I got to practice the rod-over-the-head-left-side cast, the left-hand cast, and the turn-around-and-cast-backward cast. None were too great (though not horrible), which tells me what I have to work on the next session at the pond or the lawn.

(I did get just a few minutes of lawn time in later today when at the park with the kids. The left-handed cast and double-haul are getting there. It is fun when it works.)
