Last night I tied up a couple of new Surf Miki flies. Gee, those hooks are sure sharp coming out of the box.. I stuck myself several times, trying to tie on that curly-wing thing. Nice to have new flies, though.
I drove up to Waddell again this morning, to try out the light gear, my 7wt Lamiglas rod, with the 7wt type6 shooting head and 15lb amnesia (that's the new part). The weather is nice and sunny, with a little bit of offshore wind. Tide is high, so the conditions are not ideal by a longshot. I stopped and looked at Scott Creek on the way again, but ended up not fishing there this time either.
New black amnesia feels really thin, but isn't as bad to handle as I thought it would be. It sure cuts through the surf pretty well. The weighted miki and smaller zen worm feel pretty heavy on the 7wt head, but it all casts ok (hmm.. I think I accidentally used a size larger hour-glass eyes on the new flies). The surf is pretty wild.. top of the incoming tide. I'm not seeing structure. There is a strong drift to the left. No fish...
I see a sea lion playing in the surf, further out. Looks like fun.
I cast and I cast. I try to avoid the big clumps of kelp floating about.. both so as to not loose the flies, and also so they don't wrap around my legs. The waves are strong at times, and I have to do the wave-dance in order to keep upright. I got some sand in the reel from all the splashing, which was cured by my new spiffy water bottle. It is fun, but not as much fun as I hoped for this morning.
