Thursday June 15, 2006.

I'm 40 today, so naturally I take the morning off to go fishing.

I have a hot tip, as to where a nice hole is. So I drive down there around 9, after picking up some essentials that are in the trunk of the Saab, which is in the shop. At the parking lot, it feels like the wind is up, so I decide to use the 8wt today, as I found casting the light rig in the wind problematic. As it turned out, I found casting the 8wt problematic too, as I haven't used it in a while. I started out with some truly crappy casting, which gradually got better as I got used to this setup again, but it never returned to the previous best, where I lay almost the whole line out on a good cast, and the line is a long one.

Anyway, I approach the nice hole and fish there.. it is low tide incoming, so I can actually wade out a little bit. Flies are a surf miki 3 and a zen worm on the dropper. I just tied up the miki last night. After a while I get a nice grab, and land a pretty good walleye perch. There is another guy fishing the hole a little further off.. the hole is more like 2 holes close to each other. Anyway, I don't want to encroach, but I move closer in and eventually he packs it anyway. I pulled 2 small barreds out of that spot and another nice walleye.

Phone rings, time to start heading home, but I fish a bit on the way and get another small barred, though it is snagged in the rear. They sure feel bigger when they are foul hooked like that; they have a lot more power to pull back.

Ok, thats' it for today; short and sweet. I caught some fish and am happy about it. Family and work calls now. Next time I go back to the 6wt outfit, but I need too work out more with the heavier, so as to not loose the touch there. I'm finding that there is something to be said for just having a couple of rods, as after using one for a while I really tune in to how it works best. Same with fluteplaying.. switching instruments is hard and requires about 2 weeks of retraining the embouchure.

BTW, I have put up a bulletin board, as the previous local one went offline permanently, looks like. It is here. I have emailed a few people who are putting up links to it, so hopefully those from the last group will find it, plus a bunch more that I'm letting know. I hope it will be fun, and not something I'll regret getting myself into.
