Sunday, August 16, Stanislaus River North Fork

Once in a while I get to play at being a stream fisherman, and this was one of those occasions. We're on a family trip to the mountains, and I get a little time out with one of the boys to go check out the river; the Stanislaus out of Big Trees State Park.

Anyway, we get down there around 10 am and I rig up the rod, the first outing with my little SLT #4, with a DT4F line. I figure what the hell, and tie on a Royal Wulff :)

River is pretty cold, but not horribly so. We check out some spots downstream a little, then Dominic climbs over the rocks by the bridge to look at the upstream places. I get worried about him on his own, and follow.

I tie on a Woolly Bugger, and fish a deep drift. Hey, this time I see a small trout.. maybe it came up for a look, but no takers. Anyway, nice morning to be out, and now I know where this spot is. Later in the afternoon it is chock full of bathers, including us, so maybe it is a good starting spot for a day of fishing on the river. Now I'm curious about the other access points.

We found some fishing trash; monofilament, some mono with a sinker and clasp, a broken bobber, that we packed out.

Photos are with the D300 and 28-70 f/2.8 lens. I could really get into doing more river fishing. :)

Just south of the bridge.
Royal Wulff, I tied myself.
