Shakers and Shaker songs

Yes, there are still Shakers, alive and well.

For more information on the Shakers, please visit the Sabbathday Lake Shaker's website. During summer 1997, Shelley Phillips, Debra Spencer and I recorded shaker songs in several of the actual shaker meeting halls on the east coast. The CD, sales of which will benefit the shaker villages, should be available summer 1998.

Here is the text to a Shaker song. The melody to this one is very beautiful.

Way down in the valley, my lambs be found,
secure from the tempest that now beats around.
'Tis low in the vale, My blessings flow,
but on the barren mountains bleak and chilly winds do blow.

Be strong, though your tents are surrounded with foes,
and vile persecutors rise up to oppose.
Be strong, move as one, and place your trust in Me,
remembering the righteous shall ne'er forsaken be.
