Martin's beach again. Got a couple of new clousers, to match the color and size of the hair raise jigs people are using here.
A nice morning on the beach, and I gleaned some useful information about striper fishing on the coast. No fish seen. I explored the north cove on the beach a little. Pretty, and I would feel comfortable taking the boys there.
Anyway, I found one of the fishermen there in a talkative mood: I learned that if I'm to follow the smelt run, then the IMPORTANT piece of information is that the smelt typically move in at the top of the tide, and fishing will be best then, and a few hours after. So today I was just too darned early, and had to go in to work just at the time it would pick up.
The same guy let me on to a few other places to go: Venice Beach, Kelley beach and Poplar beach in Half Moon Bay are apparently pretty good too, or have had good striper runs recently. They also don't cost $10 in parking. Kelley is free, the other are state beaches. Looking at the aerial photos, they are also longer, more spacious beaches than Martin's, so it probably wouldn't be quite as crowded either. The downside, I'm guessing, will be higher surf, as they aren't protected the way parts of Martin's beach is.
Further looking at the map (maps.google.com is fun): the first beach south of Martin's also looks interesting; looks like it might be partially protected from the full surf. It is at Tunitas Creek Rd, north of San Gregorio, just south of the place they fly RC airplanes. I wonder if it is possible to get down there..
Tomorrow I'm going perching, it looks like, and I'm looking forward to it.
